Q: The text covers all areas and ideas of the subject appropriately and provides an effective index and/or glossary
Yes, the text is comprehensive. or an introductory textbook, the range of subject areas included is impressive. There are 22 chapters, each of a significant length.
Further, the breadth and depth is on target for the intended audience. There is no index or glossary but this is not a problem given electronic search options.
Comprehensiveness Rating: 5 out of 5
Q: Content is accurate, error-free and unbiased
Yes, the content is accurate, error-free, and unbiased. The writing of the text is careful to present sociological research findings.
Content Accuracy Rating: 5 out of 5
Q: Content is up-to-date, but not in a way that will quickly make the text obsolete within a short period of time. The text is written and/or arranged in such a way that necessary updates will be relatively easy and straightforward to implement
Textbooks in this discipline have short lifespans. This textbook was published in 2016, six years ago. The text is relevant in terms of fundamental and historic aspects of the discipline. Instructors should adapt and/or assign additional readings of recent literature and events to ensure currency. The most recent data are from 2012, and the most recent scholarly references are published in 2015. Shifts in the discipline (e.g., decolonization), recent literature, and significant societal events are missing (e.g., the Black Lives Matter movement, The Paris Agreement). Some updates are straightforward and relatively easy, for example, new data figures, and adding the COVID-19 pandemic.
Relevance Rating: 3 out of 5
Q: The text is written in lucid, accessible prose, and provides adequate context for any jargon/technical terminology used
The text is written in a clear and accessible style.
Clarity Rating: 5 out of 5
Q: The text is internally consistent in terms of terminology and framework
Yes, the text is internally consistent in terminology and framework. Especially valuable are the boxes titled, “Making Connections” with case studies that bring the content to life. The end-of-chapter information is also valuable: key terms, summary, quiz questions, short answer questions, and further research. In the next edition, I highly recommend distinguishing between concepts and terms, and putting questions in a test bank to enable formative assessment flexibility within learning management systems (use Aiken format for automatic importing to Moodle).
Consistency Rating: 5 out of 5
Q: The text is easily and readily divisible into smaller reading sections that can be assigned at different points within the course (i.e., enormous blocks of text without subheadings should be avoided). The text should not be overly self-referential, and should be easily reorganized and realigned with various subunits of a course without presenting much disruption to the reader.
The modularity of this textbook is very good, for example providing all references within each chapter organized by section. My only suggestion is to number sub-sections for ease of reference with students and adapting/adopting parts of a chapter.
Modularity Rating: 5 out of 5
Q: The topics in the text are presented in a logical, clear fashion
Yes. Very clear, standard progression from an overview and history to specific topic chapters.
Organization Rating: 5 out of 5
Q: The text is free of significant interface issues, including navigation problems, distortion of images/charts, and any other display features that may distract or confuse the reader
Very good interface. I did not encounter any problems.
Interface Rating: 5 out of 5
Q: The text contains no grammatical errors
No grammatical or spelling errors. The term Aboriginal is no longer used; it should be Indigenous throughout the text.
Grammar Rating: 4 out of 5
Q: The text is not culturally insensitive or offensive in any way. It should make use of examples that are inclusive of a variety of races, ethnicities, and backgrounds
The standpoint of Indigenous Peoples could more clearly inform Indigenous issues raised throughout the text. Feminism deserves a stand-alone theoretical perspective throughout, as does post-colonialism and critical race theory.
Cultural Relevance Rating: 4 out of 5
Q: Are there any other comments you would like to make about this book, for example, its appropriateness in a Canadian context or specific updates you think need to be made?
This textbook is a valuable resource with many strengths. I recommend adaption with necessary updates or adoption with supplemental content.
